Growing up, Alex Ryan imagined himself spending his days in a newspaper newsroom or radio broadcast booth, not in the courtroom. But after pursuing communications and journalism in college and working in those industries, it occurred to him that a career in law offered many of the same challenges and rewards as those found in print and broadcast journalism. “What I enjoyed most about the field of journalism was the extent to which one is always working on deadline, the process involved in creating a spoken or written product under pressure,” says Alex. “Now in my sixth year of practice, I find that I enjoy being a lawyer for the same reasons that I enjoyed the field of journalism.”
A member of Groom’s Litigation group, Alex ’s background in journalism, as well as his broad base of experience in civil litigation, including commercial and business, insurance, and workers’ compensation litigation, serves Groom’s clients well. “As long as people are working, there will be a need for skilled employee benefits lawyers,” he says. “It is difficult to think of another area of the law that affects so many people’s everyday lives.”
This dedication to the client led Alex, a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law, to focus on employee benefits law. His sense of responsibility to clients is strengthened by the collaborative working relationships he enjoys with his colleagues at Groom. “The breadth and complexity of this area of the law demand expertise and a commitment to continued learning,” he explains. “As a newcomer to the field of employee benefits, I appreciate the extent to which my colleagues are willing to share the benefit of their collective expertise.”
Prior to coming to Groom, Alex was a litigation associate in North Carolina, most recently with the law firm Bell, Davis & Pitt. He is admitted to practice in the state of North Carolina and the District of Columbia.
