His appreciation for ballots over bullets first drew Groom benefits litigator David Remus to the law.

Born and raised in Venezuela, he lived through a failed coup attempt there in 1992 before moving that summer with his parents to their native Puerto Rico, during the middle of the American general election season.

“I went from a country grappling with intractable problems of law and governance to a country with a strong tradition in the rule of law and deeply ingrained democratic values,” says David.

The question of why some societies manage to solve their disagreements through the law, while others struggle with violence, drove him to take a degree in government and international studies at Notre Dame, earn a masters in public administration at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, graduate from Harvard Law School, and seek a career as a litigator.

"Litigation is a necessary evil," says David, "it is how members of a free society settle their irreconcilable disputes."  While he finds the practice of litigation intellectually stimulating and professionally challenging, he recognizes that for the parties involved it is often an ordeal, and he sees it as his job to help his clients navigate the uncertain waters of the litigation process to reach the best possible outcome.

He chose to specialize in benefits litigation because of the field's dynamic interplay of statutory, regulatory, and judicial bodies of law.  What brought him to Groom, says David, "was the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the premier benefits law firm in the country."

His litigation work involves representing businesses in complex commercial disputes.  He previously practiced law as a litigation associate at another firm in Washington, D.C., working on antitrust, patent, insurance, and commercial matters.
