Katy joined the firm in 2002, coming from a large New York law firm where she was a member of the employee benefits/ERISA and insurance groups. Her practice focuses on ERISA Title I and litigation, and she is also the firm’s resident expert on state insurance regulation, having advised insurers with respect to policy coverage disputes and a variety of regulatory matters and having assisted in the representation of insurers in state regulatory approval hearings.
Katy originally came to Groom to work with a mentor from a previous firm, but it is Groom’s focus on ERISA litigation that keeps her at the firm. “Groom is the best in its field,” she says and, “unlike the big firms where I worked, it takes ERISA attorneys seriously.” She also enjoys the many opportunities she’s had to conduct depositions and argue cases in court, observing that “there’s nothing more satisfying than a good win.”
When she is not competing in court, Katy is competing on the tennis court or trying to conquer golf, her latest sporting obsession. A fan of all New York sports teams, she can recite the entire Rangers roster from the 1980’s and name every coach that George Steinbrenner has fired. If you can do that, dealing with ERISA’s fiduciary provisions is a piece of cake.
Katy earned her BA with departmental honors from Haverford College in 1986, and received a JD, with honors, from The George Washington University, National Law Center in 1989.
