Juan Luis Alonso has extensive experience in the design and implementation of qualified retirement plans and nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements. He has had substantial experience in assisting "troubled" plans, including negotiations and submissions under the Puerto Rico Department of Treasury Closing Agreement Program, and the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) Voluntary Correction and Private Letter Rulings Programs. Mr. Alonso also has significant experience and expertise in handling employee benefits matters in the mergers and acquisitions context. Mr. Alonso was actively involved in providing comments and suggestions to the Puerto Rico Tax Reform Committee and the Puerto Rico Treasury Department on the retirement plan provisions included in the recently enacted Puerto Rico Internal Revenue Code of 2011, its technical amendments and recently issued guidance for the Puerto Rico qualification of retirement plans.
He has lectured on various employment benefits and tax matters, including the new 2011 Puerto Rico Code, Puerto Rico tax consequences of distributions from qualified and non-qualified retirement plans and recent developments in Puerto Rico tax law, regulations and jurisprudence. Mr. Alonso has published various articles concerning the Puerto Rico Educational Contribution Account and the Puerto Rico tax withholding, reporting and taxation requirements on settlement payments, specifically on the settlement of labor and employment law claims. He has also participated as speaker at seminars sponsored by the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Puerto Rico Bar Association, and the Society for Human Resources Management, among others. Mr. Alonso is a Certified Public Accountant and a Puerto Rico Notary Public.
