Louis T. Mazawey

Lou Mazawey is often called the "founding associate" of Groom – and it’s true.  That's because for the first 6 months that Groom was open (January - June 1975), he was the only associate.  Lou became a partner in only 5 years and has served as firm chair.

Lou’s career in ERISA work goes back as far as his career with Groom.  When he walked into his office fresh (exhausted) after taking the DC bar exam, his desk was completely clean – except for a legal pad and a copy of "ERISA."  The brand new federal pension law had been enacted only a week before and no one knew what it meant – so Lou was in the same boat as experienced lawyers.  “The amazing thing is we are still figuring out what it all means,” says Lou.  “And Congress even amends it every few years or so – just to keep us on our toes!”

Looking back on it today, Lou says he would not change a thing.  He remarks that “The practice has always been challenging and the area of law is vitally important to the well-being of American workers.  I have enjoyed working at Groom with dozens of wonderful people and first-rate clients and colleagues across the country.  It's hard to imagine a better career in law for me.”
