Mark C. Nielsen

Principal

With a background in political science and history, and a passion for international travel, Mark brings a broad world-view to his practice at Groom.  After serving at the U.S. Department of Labor and another benefits law firm in Washington, Mark has arrived at what he calls the “gold standard” in employee benefits law—the Groom Law Group.  At Groom, Mark’s areas of specialization include litigation, fiduciary counseling, prohibited transaction analysis, and HIPAA’s privacy and security rules.

Mark thrives on the challenges presented by his work at Groom.  “Employee benefits is such a complicated and multifaceted legal field—touching on everything from employment discrimination, to antitrust, and to securities laws—that I knew it was an area in which I would never stop learning.  The sophistication of Groom’s clients, and the complexity of their legal issues, present new opportunities every day.”

He serves as Vice Chair of the DC Bar Association’s Employee Benefits Committee, and he is the Co-Chair of the American Bar Association’s Subcommittee on Welfare Plan Litigation.  Mark is the author of several articles, concerning subjects as diverse as the applicability of the Americans with Disabilities Act to healthcare plans, the scope of ERISA’s preemption provision, and HIPAA’s nondiscrimination rules.  He is also a Chapter Editor of the ABA’s Employee Benefits Law treatise, a leading scholarly publication in the benefits field.

The heady atmosphere at the country’s leading ERISA law firm puts a bounce in this globe-trotting former Russian history student’s step, as he looks forward to overcoming the challenges of the employee benefits world—one client at a time.
