Thomas F. Fitzgerald

Tom cites both his colleagues and his clients when asked what brings him in to work every day: “I chose to work at Groom and still work here because of the expertise and experience of the people I work with and the quality of the people we work for.”

Tom specializes in various aspects of employee benefits law, particularly health care and litigation matters.  He is a frequent speaker on a variety of ERISA and health law issues, ranging from managed care and alternative delivery systems to the extraterritoriality of state-mandated benefit and provider laws.  He likes to convey to his audience that, as he puts it, “The law provides a general framework.  There’s lots of room within the framework to find creative solutions.”

Like all of the Groom attorneys, Tom has many interests outside of the firm, but even he was not counting on becoming the CEO of a major Washington DC bank while still working full time at Groom.  But when a local bank that his father worked for all his life, and where Tom started his work career as a 17 year old teller, ran into some problems, Tom was selected by his fellow Board of Director members to shepherd the bank through a complicated sale.  It was an immensely satisfying moment, but Tom is very happy to be just an employee benefits lawyer again.
