Cheryl Risley Hughes
Fresh out of college, Cheryl Risley Hughes first found an appetite for the law when she went to work as a paralegal in the criminal prosecutor's office in Manhattan. This brief stint in public service gave Cheryl a lasting perspective on the practice of law: "I learned early on that the law is meant to be practiced with dedication and diligence, subject to the highest ethical standards – even when under enormous pressures. But all of that is fun with the right leadership and the camaraderie of fellow lawyers."
Cheryl went on to law school and found her true legal calling – employee benefits. "I was initially attracted to the field because it is technically challenging and ever-changing. I have stuck with employee benefits, however, because of the human side. Employee benefits – retirement and health – impact the lives of most Americans."
As the legal landscape became more and more complex, Cheryl focused her practice solely on health and welfare benefits. As a member of Groom's elite health and welfare team, Cheryl helps clients deal with the overhaul of our nation's healthcare system as well as with the day-to-day legal issues that arise for health and welfare plans.
At Groom, Cheryl has once again found the leadership and camaraderie among gifted lawyers that makes the practice of law so enjoyable, and looks forward to offering her health and welfare expertise to clients of all types for years to come.
Cheryl lives in suburban Maryland with her husband, three children and one very large dog, spending her weekends with family and friends and enjoying all that the Washington, D.C. area has to offer.
