Michael Maricco helps organizations tackle the complex legal and practical benefits issues that arise on a day-to-day basis. He draws upon many years of benefits experience in the private sector and government to counsel on a wide breadth of issues, including plan design, participant disclosures, reporting obligations, service provider selection and contracting, plan funding and termination, and benefit claims.

Mike works closely with a group of related multiemployer pension and welfare plans, which grants him an insider’s perspective to benefits issues, from innovation to implementation and administration.

Prior to joining Groom in 2012, Mike led and participated in the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation’s efforts in some of the largest and most complex cases that followed the aftermath of the 2008 credit crisis. Mike also successfully navigated multi-million dollar ERISA fiduciary breach cases on behalf of the agency, in both plaintiff and defendant capacities. In the private sector, Mike has created and maintained tax-qualified benefit plans, represented clients in complex litigation matters concerning employees’ rights, and advised committees responsible for adjudicating benefit claims brought by plan participants.
