On November 13, 2006, Groom Law Group hosted a “Panel of ERISA Experts” at The George Washington University Law School.  Ellen Goodwin and Christina Crockett organized this very successful event.  About 20 students attended, most of whom had not been previously exposed to benefits law. The students were surprised and enthusiastic to learn of the wide-ranging impact that employee benefits law has on the U.S. workforce, economy and tax system, as well as the variety of professional opportunities in the field.

Ellen and Christina coordinated with students from the GWU Black Law Students’ Association to plan the event, and recruited an impressive panel, including Angela Montez, Acting General Counsel at ICMA Retirement Corporation, Groom’s own Ian Lanoff, Tom Reeder, Benefits Tax Counsel at the U.S. Treasury Department and Lisa Tavares, an associate at Venable, LLC.  Ellen moderated the panel, and a number of other Groom attorneys attended.

We hope that this event will be the first of an ongoing series of events at local law schools that will encourage more students, especially students from diverse backgrounds, to consider careers in benefits law.
