Dan Cohen is an associate in Groom’s litigation practice group. His practice focuses on representing employers in pension and benefits-related ERISA litigation, and seeing clients through the full scope of legal proceedings, including pleadings, discovery, and trial.
Prior to joining Groom, Dan was an associate at an AmLaw 50 firm, where he was part of a broad-based litigation group. A general litigator, he represented Fortune 500 and other clients in federal and state court on matters including ERISA and securities litigation, white collar investigations, and complex commercial disputes, and advised on sophisticated trust and estates issues. His previous legal experience also includes working at a boutique litigation firm focused on elections and constitutional law. In these positions, his responsibilities ranged from drafting and filing pleadings and substantive motions in all phases of litigation to managing discovery, taking and defending depositions, and participating in hearings. He also clerked on the Alaska Supreme Court in Anchorage, where he worked on a wide range of civil and commercial disputes.
While in law school, Dan was Notes Editor for the Northwestern University Law Review, a Teaching Assistant for Legal Writing and Torts, and an International Writing Fellow. He also led international legal research projects to Colombia and Mexico and volunteered with Street Law. Before law school, Dan earned a Master’s degree in Nonprofit and Organizational Management from the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies, and worked in international business development for the clean tech and food and beverage industries.
Outside of the office, Dan enjoys running, chess, dogs, and rooting for Chicago sports teams. He also serves as a Board Member for the American Jewish Committee.
