Shai Bronshtein, a trial and appellate litigator, is a Senior Counsel in Groom’s Litigation practice group. From initial pleadings to briefing before the Supreme Court, Shai leads litigation teams and formulates strategy in complex matters.  One of his hallmarks is clear, concise written advocacy that transforms complicated legal clashes into compelling and accessible stories.  Another is the ability to draw on firsthand experience with an exceptionally broad range of cases.

Prior to joining Groom, Shai was a trial attorney at the International Unit, Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section of the United States Department of Justice. In that role, he acted as both a criminal prosecutor and a civil forfeiture litigator. He led case teams from investigation through appeal in a wide variety of matters and forums. Over six years, Shai conducted nearly 20 jury and bench trials and successfully settled or obtained plea agreements in many other cases.  He secured the forfeiture of millions of dollars worth of criminal proceeds, as well as numerous guilty verdicts.  He also served as a Special U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, DC.

Before joining the Department of Justice, Shai spent four years as an associate at a boutique litigation firm in Washington, DC, where he litigated a variety of commercial disputes, including trade secret cases, appraisal actions, false advertising, and bankruptcy.  He previously clerked for The Honorable Judge Jerry E. Smith on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Shai’s roots are in journalism; he has a passion for storytelling, whether in briefs or in court.  His hands-on experience explaining thorny and novel legal issues helps him untangle tax, ERISA, and regulatory matters.  At Groom, Shai helps ensure that the firm’s litigators build the strongest cases possible, and consequently, are the strongest possible advocates for clients.
