Court Issues Landmark Decision in Church Plan Lawsuit

On December 8, 2015, a federal judge in Denver, Colorado granted summary judgment to the defendants in one of the church plan lawsuits:Medina v. Catholic Health Initiatives, et al., Civil Action No. 13-cv-01249 (D. Colo.). The court held that the defined benefit pension plan sponsored by the defendant Catholic healthcare system was a church plan under ERISA and dismissed the plaintiffs claims against all defendants, and awarded the defendants their costs.
