Groom deeply mourns the untimely and sudden passing of our dear colleague, Richard (“Rick”) Matta, on January 17.

Rick has long played a critical role in the firm’s ERISA fiduciary practice.  He was a renowned expert in all manners of investment products and services.  And he provided practical counsel to a broad and diverse group of clients in virtually every segment of the retirement system.

Rick earned a national reputation as an expert in key areas, such as Collective Investment Trusts, the DOL Prohibited Transaction Exemption Process, and IRA Products – becoming the “go-to” lawyer in these areas and co-chair of Groom’s IRA Practice Group.  Rick also was highly knowledgeable in the securities law aspects of pensions, as well as numerous tax matters, including the unrelated business income tax.  His vast experience attracted many types of clients, including national law firms across the country, all of whom were eager to tap into his understanding of the retirement industry and technical expertise.

Even though he was in great demand by clients, he never failed to make time for his family, friends, and colleagues.  He was always willing to lend a hand and was deeply committed to mentoring more junior attorneys.  We all benefited greatly from Rick’s patient and thoughtful manner.

Groom will sorely miss Rick’s quiet expertise and kind demeanor – we wish his family our deepest condolences on their unimaginable loss. Please find service information for Rick below.
