David W. Powell served as a speaker at the 2011 General Membership Meeting of the Investment Company Institute on May 6th in Washington, DC. He joined Cynthia Egan of T. Rowe Price, Peter DeProft of The European Fund and Asset Management Association (EFAMA) and Maria Wilton of Franklin Templeton Investments Australia Ltd on the panel, “Insights from the Worldwide Pension Systems.”

The panelists discussed the emergence of individual responsibility for saving and the translation of savings into retirement income in countries worldwide and explored lessons for the current U.S. retirement system, including draw-down strategies, mandatory enrollment, and the status of mandatory annuitization. Mr. Powell focused primarily on present pension reform in the UK, including auto enrolment, the NEST, state pensions and National Insurance, and other changes affecting DC and DB plans.
