Meaningful work for important clients.
Our Summer Associate Program provides realistic, hands-on experience within Groom’s unique culture. This means meaningful assignments, in which you will work side-by-side with some of the best attorneys in the nation in our field on matters and issues with real-world applications.
It also means extensive feedback. Summer associates receive ongoing guidance and mentorship from attorneys at all levels, both formally and informally. Along with helping you get to know us, we also want to get to know you, which means ample social and networking events.
We are all about communication and respect, and creating a culture where people can learn, grow, and excel in their work.
Epicenter of Benefits, Health, and Retirement Law
We are the preeminent employee benefits firm in the country, offering clients a depth of benefits, health, retirement expertise, and litigation services not found at any other law firm. Groom represents a wide variety of clients, from major financial institutions to retirement and disability plans for NFL players to some of the largest healthcare systems in the United States. You will work with a small, elite group of thought leaders and renowned authorities in our field. Your colleagues have practices that encompass all the major benefits, health, and retirement laws, and related litigation, impacting a broad spectrum of industries. You will have the opportunity to learn from the best, with extensive, hands-on work with attorneys across all practice areas.
Meaningful Work
We know it’s important for summer to gain meaningful experience in what it’s really like to be a law firm associate. At Groom, that means significant assignments for important clients. Groom attorneys continue to help shape ERISA and related fiduciary, health, and tax laws, and continue to work on high-stakes benefits questions and litigation for high profile clients, materially affecting the lives and well-being of countless people. Summer associates share in the same pool of work as our regular associates — not make-work.
We also know that training and mentorship are an important part of a great summer program. We assign each summer associate an individual mentor to show them the ropes, answer questions, and ensure they get traction right away.
How and Where You’ll Work
Groom is in the heart of D.C, in the midst of a cosmopolitan and energetic neighborhood with countless amenities and opportunities. D.C. is a truly international city, with cultural, dining and other activities, and we are right in the center of it all. We are on Pennsylvania Avenue, next to the White House, with views of Capitol Hill and Washington landmarks, and within walking distance of the National Mall, museums and the Metro.
All of Groom works together out of our one Washington, D.C. office . You will work next to attorneys of all seniority, and have exposure to everyone, not just a handful of attorneys in your specialty area. Depending on your situation, there are also opportunities for hybrid work.
Campus Interview Schedule
Our interviewing attorneys, in coordination with our Recruiting Committee, visit schools across the nation, both virtually and in person. Our interview process typically begins in late fall or early January and continues depending on law schools’ interview program schedules. While we participate in formal interviewing programs, we also welcome resume collects and individual submissions. We welcome applications from students in accredited law schools across the country who are interested in benefits, health, retirement, policy, and litigation.
How to Apply
Please submit your application materials by email to recruiting@groom.com. Please attach to your email your resume, transcripts, and a brief writing sample. Undergraduate transcripts and law school transcripts are required. Students will need to provide their first semester fall grades as a supplement once available. Cover letters are optional, but encouraged. In your cover letter or email, please detail which of our practice areas are of interest to you and why.
